Teacher suspended for doing her job

by Trench Reynolds on March 3rd, 2006

Teacher suspended over MySpace.com warning:

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich., March 2 (UPI) — A teacher in St. Claire Shores, Mich., has been suspended over a student-produced broadcast warning about the dangers of MySpace.com.

Images taken from the Web site and broadcast on the internal cable system at Lakeview High School were edited and blurred, WDIV-TV, Detroit, reported.

“A lot of people are saying it is the best show they’ve ever seen the TV broadcasting class produce,” student producer Neil Willoughby told the TV news. “It was really hard-hitting.”

Other students agreed, saying the message — warning about content and predators in the virtual community — was important.

So what’s the problem you ask?

School officials, however, maintained the broadcast’s message “was lost because of the selection of photographs, language and music that were included.”

The teacher was escorted from the building Tuesday and school officials refused to comment on her status.

Thats just great. We have a teacher who actually cares about the safety of her students, actually puts out a message that gets through to her students, and the school suspends her.

The public education system in our country strikes again. I hope she sues the crap out of them.

So. I definitely go the school where this happened at and am in the class that the show was made in. Our teacher has been removed and so have all of our computers, so not olnly are we stuck with out a teacher, but all of our tools to continue trying to learn are gone too. So here we are sticking our thumbs up our asses for soon to be a week. Sounds smart dont it?

Typical behavior of public school administrations.

What I want to know is this: What exactly are they saying is wrong with the piece? They say “photographs, language, and music” were not appropriate. But from your knowledge of the piece, what exactly was in there?

I have heard that there was one photo of a girl with a beer in her hand. Was that right? Also, what language was included and what music?

Please be as specific as possible, as there are many that are following this case because of the possible First Amendment issues.

    thanks,

    Brad

That’s all I know for now Brad. My guess would be it was just teens using foul language and music that high school kids listen to. You know stuff that make parents tell you to turn it down.

I know it’s old news, but I felt I’d clear it up.
    I produced the segment.
The language was from the 25 year old.
Words like slut and whore were ‘beeped’ out.
But the censoring showed there was a derogatory word present.
The audio a song from Stretch Armstrong.

Perhaps we should bombard the school w/e-mails and mention the possibility of even more negative publicity…if there’s one thing school admins hate, it’s anything that publically portrays them in a bad light.
