BRIAN DICKERSON: Teens’ truthful report shocks adult viewers:
This is another article about the teacher from Michigan who was suspended for basically doing her job. Basically the teacher, Devon Fralick, runs a broadcasting class. Two students, Neil Willoughby and Scott Sobanski, made a video warning fellow students on the dangers of MySpace…
Willoughby and Sobanski’s 8-minute report on MySpace.com was broadcast to Lakeview students over the high school’s closed-circuit Silver and Blue network last week, and right away, Willoughby says, he and Sobanski knew they had a hit on their hands.
“It was the first time everybody was totally silent to watch one of our reports,” Willoughby recalled Sunday. “We really got kids’ attention.”
The video, which featured excerpts from the MySpace Web sites of several Lakeview students and an interview with a 25-year-old Internet user who enjoys trolling the popular Web site to look at photos posted by teenage girls, shocked many in the captive audience.
But school administrators say the “message was lost because of the selection of photographs, language and music that were included.”
I think I know what the real problem is…
“One of the postings was of a sophomore girl in a bikini with a beer in her hand,” Willoughby said. “Her mom’s really going after the school for that, but the picture was from the girl’s own Web site.”
The dreaded “Not My Kid” syndrome has reared it’s ugly head.
Rather than teaching their students the school disguises Ms. Fralick’s suspension under the guise of improprieties. It’s not like they were showing hardcore porn. The music and the language was something I’m sure the students hear everyday. And if that gets the message across for the students to be safer then whats the problem?
