MySpace deleted 200K “objectionable” profiles

by Trench on March 31st, 2006

MySpace acts to calm teen safety fears:
MySpace is deleting over 200K profiles that they deem objectionable. Or as Pat from BelchSpeak put it “They could delete about 800k more based on style choices and html coding skills.”

MySpace.com, the fast-growing community website hugely popular with American teens, has removed 200,000 objectionable profiles from its site as it steps up efforts to calm fears about the safety of the network for young users.

Ross Levinsohn, head of News Corps internet division, said some of the material taken down contained hate speech. Some of it, he said, was too risqu.

‘It’s a problem that’s endemic to the internet not just MySpace, Mr Levinsohn said. ‘The site, in the last two months, I think has become safer.’

In my opinion it has more to due with advertising dollars than safety…

Also, advertisers have to feel confident their reputation will not be tainted by ‘inappropriate’ content.

Money always speaks louder than any kids’ safety.

I was 1 of the 200k deleted from myspace , and I was really concerned to why i was deleted and for what purpose i was deleted for . Since I am not a adult preditor or even under the age of 16 . I think the person or people who were doing the choosing of deleted accounts were not really looking at the things and real reason why to delete a person . Even though there are about 10,000 under the age of 16 still on myspace on .

This is crazy! I am 28 years old and there was nothing “risque” on my page. I use Myspace to keep in touch with my friends and family. I have pictures of my nieces and cats on there. I am not a sexual predator. I am a happily married woman! The teenagers will still get on and there will always be predators! parents need to know what there kids are doing! This all comes down to dollars and cents. They don’t give a damn about these kids safety. It’s all about the advertising!

This is really unfair. I am only 15, but I had nothing even remotely “risque” on my myspace. Being that I’m 15, it was set to private, therefore I had to accept someone’s request or add them myself for them to view my page. So, this really isn’t a matter of safety, seeing as my friend who might I add is the same age as me, has over 1000 friends, did not get deleted, though her myspace would be a little more understandable to worry about safety. But hey, whatever. If you want to make myspace all about advertisement and all that money concern that it’s turned into, go for it. Though if I stand correctly, myspace WAS “a place for friends”.

The “risque” deletions happened back in March. For the more recent ones (July) go here

Children and teens under 18 years old should have their own online community. This is just an excuse to infringe upon our freedom of speech. What is deemed “objectionable” to some is not necessarily objectionable to others. Is it offensive when I use the word “shit” in lieu of “things” or “stuff”? There is nothing offensive semantically. I could use nice language and have a “clean” profile and still be a predator. How does that help keep children/teens safe? It doesn’t. This is a clear case of censorship and an example of the right-wing Disneyland that is usurping this country.

Or it could be that MySpace is just undergoing maintenance right now.

    Or that.

Regardless of what happens on myspace, the issue of censorship should be discussed, although maybe this is not the place for that. Whining about losing your myspace profile doesn’t accomplish anything. Ahh, what the heck, I’ll join everyone else and say, it sucks.

We can talk about censorship if you want. However what MySpace did back in March isn’t censorship. Only the government can censor. MySpace is a privately owned business that are well within their rights to delete any profile they find objectionabke.

I was deleted, however a few hours later I was able to log in again. My profile is so non-objectionable. Look for yourselves: http://www.myspace.com/je_vis

Oh for the love of Jesus, let’s not drag out the tired, worn-out right wing conspiracy theories again.

i just “lost” a friend to myspace deletions. “Buttercup Vagina”. Eye feel a sense of genuine loss, and building anger towards myspace’s deletion of her…just like above, as it will undoubtedly be below, important friendships are being severed by police statementality…long live Shauna…eye guest in short shorts, a messagemassagemenage to the world, ensure you have a listing of all your contact’s addresses, so that when that Day of Judgment comes, you will be prepared…damn, i think i just said something really stupid talking to my brother on the phone after he called me from the airport…in jest, but 9-11 has changed everything hasn’t it, probably even myspace… http://www.myspace.com/hhhuman
