Fake teacher’s MySpace follow up

by Trench Reynolds on April 22nd, 2006

I originally told you about a situation in Coon Rapids, Minn. here where an unknown student made a fake MySpace profile of one of the teachers from Rapids Middle School. At the time I wondered what was so bad to warrant felony charges. Now we know…

Authorities blame 8th grader for Web hoax:

COON RAPIDS, Minn. - An eighth-grader could face charges after he allegedly created a bogus Web site page that depicted his middle school English teacher as a child pornographer.

The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office said the boy created the page on the popular Web site MySpace.com out of anger toward the teacher at Coon Rapids Middle School in suburban Minneapolis. Other students at the school told the principal that they heard the boy and his friends talking about the hoax and later admitted to it, Capt. Rob Bredsten said.

“The main culprit was an eighth-grade kid who started the whole thing,” Bredsten said. “He was mad at the teacher for whatever reason, and he decided it would be a good idea to open this site on MySpace.”

No arrests have been made, but the case is being prepared to be sent to the county’s juvenile division for charges. The boys’ names were not released.

The eighth-grader created a fake profile in mid April with the teacher’s name that included attachments to child pornography, Bredsten said. The profile was removed from the site within a day.

But it didn’t stop there, Bredsten said.

The boy allegedly joined with four eighth-graders and an 11th-grader to create another profile for the teacher that portrayed the teacher saying he liked to molest students and also make anti-Semitic remarks.

I can see how that would get them in trouble.
