The MySpace Cellphone

by Trench Reynolds on May 2nd, 2006

MySpace-linked cell phones go on sale:
This is a brilliant idea from a marketing standpoint. A cellphone that allows users to access their MySpaces and allows them to take pictures and immediately upload it to their MySpaces. In theory it will rake in a cubic assload of cash.

From a parenting standpoint it’s the worst idea ever. If you buy one of these for your kid you deserve to have your parenting license taken away. Oh, that’s right. There’s no such thing as a parenting license. So I’m sure there will be a group of assclowns out there that will buy these for their kids. This means that kids will be able to communicate on MySpace unsupervised. Then again if a parent buys them one of these phones they’re probably unsupervised anyway. This will put the predators even that much closer to your children.

It’s not cheap either…

Helio’s two models, “Hero” and “Kickflip,” will cost $275 and $250, respectively. The phones, based on Korean designs and made by Asian manufacturers, have large color screens, removable memory and cameras with flashes.

The cheapest plan that includes unlimited data costs $85 a month, and includes 1,000 voice minutes (evenings and weekends are free.) The average U.S. cell-phone bill is around $50.

So you’ll basically be paying to have your kids approached by sexual predators.

And here’s another nifty feature…

After laying out the money for a phone and a plan, buyers may be tempted to use an unusual feature of the service: begging by cell phone. Users can ask other users to buy them games, music or videos that they can download to the phone. Games cost $5.99, while music videos cost $2.49.

Where I come from that’s called whoring yourself out.

The first time a kid disappears because he had one of these phones the backlash will be immense and brutal.
