Social site to block photos

by Trench on June 10th, 2006

Teen site moves to block photos:
No, not MySpace. This is about MySpace’s UK competitor Bebo

A website aimed at young people says it is moving to block explicit photographs from being downloaded onto its site.

Sarah Gavin from Bebo UK was responding to an investigation by BBC NI over privacy and child safety issues.

Bebo has become one of the most popular social networking websites with schoolchildren in Northern Ireland.

The move follows concerns from parents and teachers about young people downloading photographs and having inappropriate conversations online.

However, Ms Gavin said Bebo took privacy and safety “very seriously”.

A new software system is being considered which would allow site managers to preview all photos manually and move quickly to remove any offensives ones, she said.

We have a number of features in place to help us protect our users. If there are any reports of abuse we are looking to turn those around within 24 hours,” she said.

“As soon as we have a report of abuse from any member, any parent, any teacher, we look to take the pictures down immediately.”

Ms Gavin said Bebo was the “number one social networking website in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand”. She said they could not have achieved this without strenuous safety measures.

So why can’t MySpace do this?

Myspace DOES do this. You could report users pictures before but most people didn’t because you had to go through a long process. Recently however, they added a button under the photo’s that says ‘report this image’
All you do is click that button and they check it out.

You know, back in the days that I was doing online dating (I know, I’m a loser!) I remember Match.Com doing this. All photos had to go through an approval process prior to posting.

    how hard can it be?

    Myspace should do it .
I have clicked on some of my daughters friends sites and man if they were my kids I would kick their a**. (well they aren’t really friends, they go to school with her)
Some of their pictures show them in little skimpy shirts, shorts, underwear, whatever.
These girls are 14-15. There is no way they should have pictures like that up there.
If I knew their parents I would tell them what the heck their kids have up there and to check it out.
I told her one friends mother about a picture her daughter had up and now the girl no longer has a myspace and i think she hates me.
But I don’t care. There is no reason for anyone to post those pictures of themselves on the internet for the world to see no matter how old they are.
It is just plain sleazy in my opinion

Man, this site is the bomb! I’ve been plugging it at school and on Myspace bulletins. I fall over laughing whenever I repeat the title of the page. A Place for Fiends. HEH. Brilliant. 8-)
