2 girls sentenced for threats on MySpace:
Two Toledo area girls have been sentenced for making threats on MySpace…

PORT CLINTON Two Genoa teenagers accused of posting threats to kill a classmate on a teen-oriented Web site were sentenced yesterday morning after entering into a plea bargain in Ottawa County Juvenile Court.

The girls, one 16 and the other 17, attend Genoa Area High School. Each pleaded no contest to reduced charges of one count of menacing, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, said Christy Cole, an Ottawa County assistant prosecutor.

They were found guilty and sentenced by Judge Kathleen Giesler.

Both girls were placed on probation and required to perform 30 hours of community service. Neither is to have access to MySpace.com, a popular Web site with teens, or other online instant messaging services until further notice, and they are to have no contact with the 15-year-old victim except to write a letter of apology. Theyll also be responsible for fines and court costs, Ms. Cole said.

Each had been charged in early March with delinquency in connection with aggravated menacing, a misdemeanor of the first degree.

Neither girl has a prior criminal record.

The charges stem from messages sent to one another and posted on MySpace.com. In one of numerous messages, one of the girls threatened to slit the 15-year-old schoolmates throat. In another posted Jan. 15, the other girl talked about whether they should smash the younger girls head into the ground and make her hair red.

In other postings in a chat room, the girls talked about hiding the victims body and discussed going to jail together if they got caught.

Authorities said the messages were posted in January from the girls home computers.

According to a memo sent to the Ottawa County Prosecutors Office by sheriffs Deputy Amy Harrell, the 15-year-old victim told Deputy Harrell that she thought the threats resulted because one of the older girls had begun dating a friend of hers and was jealous.

30 hours of community service seems a little to light due to the severity of the threats but that’s just me.
