Scottish school bans Bebo
Top private school bans pupils from using chatroom:
Another school, another ban. This time in Scotland and for the usual reasons…
THE headteacher of one of one of the city’s leading private schools has banned pupils from using a popular internet chatroom amid fears about the children’s safety.
George Watson’s College has blocked access to the Bebo website from school computers after staff became concerned about what pupils were posting on it.
There are fears that children posting pictures and personal details of themselves and fellow pupils could fall prey to paedophiles.
Staff are also worried the site could become a tool for school bullies and that messages and images could become a source of embarrassment in the future once pupils are looking for jobs.
Gareth Edwards, principal at George Watson’s College, has also written to the parents of 11-to-14-year-olds warning them about his concerns.
It comes after state schools in the region revealed plans to start teaching children as young as nine about the dangers of the web. Specially-developed software which mimics adults posing as children will teach youngsters how to spot the warning signs.
Now if only parents would become more aware.
