Pimp MySpace…No really
Internet Pimps Target Myspace:
Troye Newcomb knows many prostitutes. She hands out condoms in Chinatown.
One of her 19-year-old clients told her what some social workers already know: Pimps are recruiting girls on myspace.com.
Troye Newcomb, of Life Foundation, says, “I was told…yeah for sure…she’s seen pimps on myspace and she has friends that have been talking to pimps on myspace.”
Detective Chris Duque says, “Where kids hang…that’s where preditor’s hang.”
Detective Chris Duque says pimps on Myspace are like other predators. They target girls with low self-esteem. And Myspace is a perfect place to do it–where kids blog their personal feelings.
Newcomb says, “When a young girl is expressing angst, upset, frustration with parents…the normal things young girls go through emotionally..that is a time when a pimp can really hone in because the girl is extra vulnerable.”
Detective Duque’s advice for girls….”stay away from people who support negative behavior, like taking drugs or having sex.”
Another red-flag…if someone wants you to keep your conversations secret.
Duque says, “They might say ‘I hope you don’t tell no one else’ they are very secretive with their communication with the child.”
Also a pimp may be very curious about personal information, like who your friends are.
And pimps are known to buy their victims electronic toys and pre-paid cell-phones.
So Duque says parents “be aware”…and talk to your kids. “The same questions apply in the physical world applies in cyber space:what you gonna do, who you gonna go with, when you gonna come back, how am I going to get ahold of you? That’s very simple.”
And its not just men parents should worry about. Social workers say prostitutes themselves are setting up profiles to help their pimps recruit young girls.
Again if you’re one of those parents who think MySpace is harmless think again. If you’re not watching your kids on MySpace someone else probably is.
