Man charged with second-degree murder:
The man suspected of causing a automobile accident in Yuma that claimed the life of a pregnant woman’s unborn child was charged Tuesday with five felonies, including a charge of second-degree murder.
John Duane Allison, 21, of Yuma, was also charged in Yuma Justice Court with four counts of aggravated assault for the Friday night car crash on 16th Street that also injured two other people.
Allison, who was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence, was arraigned by Justice of the Peace David Cooper, who ordered Allison’s bail remain at the $500,000 set at a previous hearing.
According to court and Yuma police records, Allison was driving his 1991 Chevrolet pickup westbound in the 600 block of 16th Street when he crossed into the eastbound left-turn lane, colliding with a red 1993 Mazda sedan driven by Mayra Lopez at about 9 p.m. Lopez was preparing to make a left turn onto 6th Avenue, according to police.
Lopez, 32, who was about nine months pregnant, was treated at the scene by Yuma Fire Department before Rural/Metro Ambulance Service took her to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where the unborn child was pronounced dead, according to police.
Lopez’s mother-in-law, Francis Llamas, was given an opportunity to address the court Monday.
“I want him to really think things over and react to what his future will be like,” she said.
According to court records, Allison submitted to a non-evidentiary breath test following the accident that indicated his blood-alcohol level to be .204, more than twice the legal intoxication limit.
Allison also admitted to drinking about seven beers at Crazy Earl’s bar in the Foothills before the accident, according to court records.
