Katrell Collier

by Trench on August 16th, 2006

Friends, family mourn apparent suicide of Katrell Collier:
Katrell Collier was close friends with Ellis T Jones III the craigslist Robber. He had recently turned his life over to Christ and was trying to make things right with the law…

The San Jose Mercury News has learned that just a few days before his death, Collier went to San Jose detectives and gave them inside information about a series of robberies tied to the Web site craigslist, about which he had lied to them before.

Police wouldn’t disclose precisely what Collier told them. But Collier was close friends with Ellis T. Jones III, an SJSU cornerback who is in jail in Tulare County. San Jose police believe Jones used classified ads on craigslist to lure robbery victims.

Unfortunately Katrell Collier took his own life by jumping off a parking garage.

Police arrived and quickly determined that it appeared to be a suicide. There was no note. But there were also no inconsistent wounds, no signs of foul play. Others have jumped from the garage before. It’s tall, open to the public and close to campus. Collier, at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, would have been difficult to push off the garage without a struggle or a sound.

Witnesses heard nothing but his body hitting the ground.

Word of Collier’s fall spread quickly. By midnight, about 50 friends, teammates and coaches had gathered at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for what became an all-night vigil. It wasn’t just Collier’s new friends who showed up. Faces from the past - some of whom Collier was trying to escape - sat side-by-side and prayed with the people who were offering him a clean slate.

He was pronounced dead at 4:34 a.m.

Several family members said they would investigate Collier’s death, but they would not elaborate.

“He was telling me, `I finally got it. I finally realized it,’” said Valerie Collier of Florida, about her nephew’s religious conversion. “He was excited. And now here he is dead.

“They are ruling it a suicide. But if this child came to you on Friday and confessed some things and on Wednesday he is dead, well - there should be something that can be done about it.”

My prayers and condolences go out to the friends and family of Katrell Collier.
