Cops drag feet on stalker case
MySpace threat against girl lands in legal grey area:
This makes absolutely no sense considering how many people have been arrested in the past for MySpace threats…
TROUTDALE, Ore. - A Troutdale, Oregon, teenager who received a graphic death threat via her MySpace.com account found out that cyberspace threats don’t carry the same weight with police as real world threats.
Troutdale police initially say they could not intervene in the case, but that they did get involved when the person who made the threat allegedly moved beyond the realm of the Internet and left a written note inside the girl’s home.
He could now be arrested on burglary, trespassing and harassment charges.
The teen who was threatened said the messages came from someone who calls himself “the big hurt stick.”
His second written note was signed ‘Nick.’
She says she believes the suspect is someone she met just briefly in real life.
The girl says she received a long, rambling threat filled with descriptions of guns the suspect purports to own and the detailed effects of certain types of gunshot wounds.
The message also threatened to ‘put her in a wheelchair.’
Initial contact with the Troutdale Police Department ended up frustrating the girl and her mother. Police said they could not act on a threat that was only made online.
But when the girl discovered a handwritten note from the alleged stalker and police found his MySpace page covered with photos of illegal drugs, they decided to get involved.
That sounds more like a lazy police force than anything. I have all the respect in the world for law enforcement but when they’re not doing their job I don’t. They should have intervened before this stalker entered the victim’s home.
Anyway we have the alleged stalker’s MySpace.
