William Ashby
Effingham shooting suspect killed in Florida:
Florida authorities shot and killed a Savannah man wanted for a string of deadly crimes along the East Coast, including a shooting and armed robbery in Effingham County.
Florida officials fired at William T. Ashby, 37, Monday night after a high-speed chase outside St. Augustine, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.
Police began chasing the suspect Monday afternoon in Flagler County, after deputies spotted a car matching the description of a suspect from Palm Beach.
Officers chased Ashby through two counties as he sped north on Interstate 95 at speeds of 100 miles per hour or more, said Sgt. Chuck Mulligan, spokesman for the St. Johns Sheriff’s Office.
He drove up an embankment on State Road 16 in St. Johns County, Fla., and crashed into a fence, deputies said. Shots were fired and authorities returned fire, killing him, Mulligan said.
Police say he may be linked to five deaths from Virginia to Florida.
“We have him as a suspect in multiple homicides in various jurisdictions,” Mulligan said. “Potentially five.”
The warrants stem from a Sept. 24 incident in which Ashby shot Waynetta Toler in the head during an armed robbery at a convenience store in Eden, McDuffie said.
Since you’re reading about him here Ashby did have a MySpace.
