Politician wants to block MySpace from sex offenders

by Trench on October 21st, 2006

Put sex offenders on Web lockdown, Sen. Mrvan says:

INDIANAPOLIS | A Northwest Indiana legislator running for re-election wants to make Myspace and other online social networking sites off limits to convicted sex offenders.

State Sen. Frank Mrvan, D-Hammond, says he will pursue legislation next year that would require Internet providers to block access to certain Web sites, chat rooms and instant-messaging services if a customer is listed on the state’s sex offender registry. The searchable online registry lists roughly 7,500 individuals convicted of child molestation, rape, child pornography and other offenses.

“These people wouldn’t have access to the various chat rooms and all the various sites where the kids go,” Mrvan said Thursday. “I’m not too familiar with (the sites) — my kids are grown up. But people who read about the bills we passed last year — when we were walking door-to-door — they said that Internet predators are a big problem.”

That’s all well and good but how do you plan on implementing this. What’s stopping the predators from going to a library or any other place that has public internet access?

We really need more politicians who are actually web savvy.

Hey Trench, at 10 p.m (eastern time I believe) on CNN they are running something called “Myspace Unraveled”. Believe they are going to talk about the promiscious pictures that teens put up, etc.
