Reckless driving in PA.

Hilly terrain offers fatal ‘fun’:

Teenagers in Southwestern Pennsylvania have a long tradition of using its hilly terrain like amusement park rides.

Some in Somerset County have gotten their kicks by making their vehicles go airborne over a hill along rural East Mud Pike in Brothersvalley Township for as long as Marilyn Baker can remember.

“Unfortunately, it’s been going on forever. Supervisors have repeatedly asked PennDOT to fill in a dip that gives kids an extra kick before they hit that hump, but nothing’s been done,” said Baker, a veteran township secretary.

District Attorney Jerry Spangler hopes that criminal charges state police have filed against an 18-year-old man for a fatal accident there July 24 will deter other drivers from recklessly sailing vehicles over the dip.

“From what I understand, they get some kind of thrill going over that. It’s a rural, rolling country road, and unfortunately, here, there are some very tragic consequences,” Spangler said.

Jason Matthew Reese, of Fairhope, was arraigned Nov. 24 before Boswell District Judge Susan Mankamyer on charges of homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter for the accident that killed his friend, Michael Coddington, 17, of Berlin.

State police allege Reese was driving a car with Coddington and three other passengers on East Mud Pike when he attempted to “jump a small hill.”

Reese’s car launched into the air. When it returned to the road, Reese lost control and the car rammed into a utility pole and a mailbox.

State police at Somerset figure Reese, who had just graduated from Brothersvalley High School, “was traveling between 80 and 90 miles per hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone,” Spangler said.

“They accelerate at the bottom of that hill and fly up there to become airborne,” Spangler said.

Attempts to reach Reese, now a freshman at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and the victim’s family were unsuccessful.

And thanks to K we have Reese’s MySpace. Check out the comments around July and August of 2006.

See kids. Driving like a jackass may seem like fun but it can get you and your friends killed and leave you with a lifetime of guilt or acting like a really callous jerk.
