Florida proves you can make sensible legislation
Fla. Links With MySpace To Fight Predators:
Florida, of all states, is actually doing something reasonable about online sexual predators. Lawmakers are counting on MySpace to help them catch predators. What a novel concept.
TALLAHASSEE — Attorney General Bill McCollum and legislative sponsors of a bill combatting sexual predators who use the Internet to lure children will join forces today with representatives of the popular computer site known as MySpace.com, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
The House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee has a 1 p.m. meeting scheduled to hear from McCollum and state Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, who is the House sponsor of the cyber-predator legislation (HB 573).
The committee will also hear presentations from Hermanshu Nigam, chief security officer of Fox Interactive Media and MySpace.com, and John Cardillo, chief executive officer of Sentinel Tech.
After the committee meeting, McCollum and House Speaker Marco Rubio, R-Miami, have scheduled a news conference to discuss the pending bill. Senate sponsor Nancy Argenziano, R-Dunnellon, will join the discussion of the Cybercrimes Against Children Act of 2007.
The bill gives the Office of Statewide Prosecution in McCollum’s office authority to investigate and prosecute all crimes committed by, or connected to, use of the Internet. The bill also increases felony penalties for use of computers to store, make or transmit images of children in sexual activity.
How bizarre is it that the most messed up state in the country has the most sensible proposed legislation yet?
