Local news shows legislation is futile
KBTV Investigation Reveals Sex Offenders Still on MySpace:
This is an article from a local news station in Texas. I’ll tell you why it’s important after the quote.
Even after MySpace implemented a program to remove profiles of convicted sex offenders, KBTV discovered that some right here in Southeast Texas remained part of the online community. Our own simple search revealed seven local offenders who remained on the social networking site. MySpace has developed a database designed to identify those offenders and block them from membership.
Jefferson County adult probation director Michael Fairley says his officers regularly scan MySpace looking for offenders. Fairley says most offenders on probation aren`t even allowed to have Internet access, period.
“These rules are explained explicitly to them,” says Fairley.
Jason Daniels of Jefferson County was informed of those rules. In fact, when a probation officer came across a MySpace profile for Daniels in December, Daniels was ordered off the site. The probation officer thought the matter was taken care of; KBTV discovered that it wasn`t. The profile remained active, but it has been terminated since our finding (which led to a court hearing for Jason Daniels).
Ok, here’s my point. If the threat of being returned to jail isn’t keeping sex offenders off of MySpace what hope is there for any legislation against MySpace? Instead of legislating MySpace how about legislating against oblivious parents?
