Registered SO’s on MySpace

by Trench Reynolds on February 19th, 2007

I appreciate that some of you are sending me the MySpaces of known sex offenders. I appreciate that your concerned about sex offenders living in your area. However I am not going to post those MySpaces. I will only post those MySpaces for criminals who are being actively arrested. The reason I don’t post them is because I do not want to contribute to vigilantism. If you are concerned about registered sex offenders being on MySpace I politely suggest that you get in touch with your local law enforcement and MySpace.

    Hi Trench,

Thanks for drawing the line somewhere.

Most of these people have done their time and just wish to contribute to society again. Unfortunately, over-zealous politicians in some states have made almost EVERY remotely sexual crime a register-able offense. Some of these people are even convicted of lewd, but not dangerous behaviors including mooning.

There’s plenty of bad people out there for parents to worry about, and it would be nice to think that most of them have been caught already and are on a registry list. Unfortunately, this is not the case. 90% of people arrested for sex crimes today are NOT on the registry.

Registries could have been a very good tool to warn parents about the worst of the worst, but instead politicians have used fear to write legislation that makes them look like they’re protecting society from millions of predators. The lists in some states are full of people who comitted minor offense or have very low risk of reoffense.

So, I applaud you for not giving your readers a false sense of security in posting myspace accounts of registered sex offenders. It is the unregistered yet-to-be sex offender parents should really be most concerned about. A list isn’t going to keep your child safe. You are. Parents are the only proven solution to this problem. The sooner politicians realize that, the sooner we’ll have a safer web.
