Police lecture common sense

by Trench on February 20th, 2007

Officer: Parents must protect kids from online predators :
Do you really need to hold a seminar to teach common sense? Apparently this police officer felt that he had to. And I guess that some parents really need to hear it from someone in authority before they believe it.

Before running them through an explicit, alarming two-hour account of the evils that can befall children online, Bedford County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Rodney L. Thompson told a group of parents Monday that he could not tell them how to protect their children from “perverts and predators.”

The responsibility to keep children safe falls to each individual parent, he said.

“I cannot tell you how to prevent it,” he said.

It is up to the parent, he said, to control the situation, to decide to do things such as set rules for computer use, monitor Internet usage and Myspace.com accounts, install Internet monitoring software if necessary and move the child’s computer from the child’s bedroom to a family area.

This article should be required reading for any parent who still doesn’t have a clue about how to protect their kids online. Sadly some parents will still probably blame MySpace and say there’s nothing they can do.
