Copspace VI: The Termination

by Trench on February 23rd, 2007

Officer involved in country singer’s arrest fired:
One of the Lexington, Kentucky police officers involved with the infamous (at least on this site) MySpace scandal has been fired from his position. However it wasn’t just for his MySpace.

The officer who arrested country singer John Michael Montgomery on a drunken-driving charge was fired Wednesday amid continued fallout over his handling of the arrest and controversial postings on a Web site.

Officials voted Wednesday to dismiss Joshua Cromer, saying his credibility and trustworthiness as a police officer had been compromised. Cromer had been suspended for nearly a year.

Testimony during an eight-hour hearing before the Urban County Council focused on Cromer’s MySpace page. One officer posted on the page an altered photograph of Montgomery and a fan in which Cromer’s face had been placed on the head of the fan. Police Chief Anthany Beatty called the situation an “embarrassment” for his department.

Cromer and five other officers were administratively charged in March for postings they made on the Web site MySpace.com in which they discussed their jobs, commented on arrests they had made and used derogatory language about gays and mentally disabled people. Cromer later posted an apology on his MySpace page.

Police officials charged Cromer with unbecoming conduct, dishonesty and insubordination. Besides the MySpace comments, he was accused of taking a picture of Montgomery’s suspended driver’s license to share with other people and never logging audio recordings from Montgomery’s arrest into evidence.

Like I’ve said many times before police have a very dark sense of humor. They have to because of the things they encounter on the job. But let this be a lesson to other police out there. If you’re going to joke like this keep your profile private. And even then things you post on your MySpace may still come back to bite you on the ass.
