More media coverage of craigslist hookers

by Trench on February 28th, 2007

Police make prostitution arrests from online classifieds site:
Regular media is slowly but surely starting to catch on to the craigslist prostitution problem. This time from Nashville. Basically the article states that it definitely makes it easier for police. It also exemplifies the tragedies involved with it.

“It makes it easier for us,” said Lt. Mitch Fuhrer of the Specialized Investigations Division, which deals with prostitution busts.

“In the past, escorts used to advertise in magazines and newspapers, but all those have been shut down. They’ve all gone to the Internet.”

Fuhrer said disguised prostitution offerings are often obvious — massages for $200 per hour, for instance — but added that others weren’t as apparent.

“We arrested one that was a mom that was working off her daughter’s computer,” he said.

As usual craigslist is evasive on the topic.

Representatives for craigslist did not respond Tuesday to an e-mail from The Tennessean requesting information concerning the site’s “exotic services” section.

If I had mad photoshop skills I’d p-shop a picture of the craigslist CEO sticking his fingers in his ears going “la la la la la I can’t hear you…”

I’m not sure why you give people who want to hold Myspace responsible such a hard time, while saying that craigslist should hold full accountability for the actions of its illegitimate users.

On a seperate point - Prostitution will always be around. Closing it down on craigslist will just force it elsewhere. That said, wouldn’t you rather have hookers arranging their dates on the internet than on the street in front of your appartment?

Your question should be why aren’t the same people who want to hold MySpace responsible not holding craigslist responsible.

Drugs and murder and child molestation have always been around too. Should we stop prosecuting those as well? Personally I think prostitution should be legalized. But until then it’s still a crime.

It is not that I think we should stop prosecuting prostitution. I just think that craigslist shouldn’t be held liable for it. Afterall, it’s a little bit like crashing your car into a guard rail and blaming the state highway department for your accident.

Look at it this way. Predators on MySpace aren’t advertising on MySpace saying “I’m going to molest your kids”. Hookers on craigslist are advertising a crime out in the open on craigslist.

Prostitution should be legal…but seeing as it isn’t I suppose that craiglist should hold responsibility.

    Sellings legal, f***ings legal…WHY ISN’T SELLING F***ING LEGAL?!
