IMSafer Launches MySpace Monitoring for Parents:
From the article…
IMSafer, an online parental monitoring tool that works with instant messengers including AIM, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger, launched their service for MySpace on Wednesday. This is exceedingly important, as MySpace is often a target for the press regarding their safety options and the tools they offer for the protection of their users. IMSafer, launched last October, provides a flagging tool for parents to keep an eye on the activity of their children’s instant messages, to ward off potential predators.
IMSafer’s service is differentiated by the fact that they don’t log all of the activity that occurs over IM, and now MySpace, but instead catch keywords that would signal the presence of a predator trying to move in on a minor. IMSafer’s software can track every computer where a monitored username signs on, expanding the effectiveness of the service.
In theory this sounds pretty good and it seems to cover a lot of ground that other monitoring software doesn’t. However I’m always skeptical of these kind of products when they’re first released. My main issue is with IMSafer using keywords instead of logging whole chats. Language is constantly changing. Is IMSafer going to keep up with the changes? Not only that but services like this can also be used for stalking by predators as well or by people trying to glean personal information for identity theft.
In my opinion the best defense against predators is to keep the computer in a common area like the living room.
If time permits I will have a review of IMSafer. In the meantime if you’d like to try it out yourself you can go to the IMSafer website.
