What do you do with a drunken pirate?
Apparently you deny her of her teaching degree.
Would-Be Teacher Denied Degree Over ‘Drunken Pirate’ MySpace Photo Sues University:
27-year-old Stacy Snyder, pictured at left, had her teaching degree denied by Millersville University because of said picture. She was denied her teaching degree the night before her graduation and instead received a Bachelor of Arts degree. Snyder is suing the school.
Snyder received “superior” or “competent” ratings on her final student-teacher evaluation in all areas except “professionalism,” in which she was labeled “unsatisfactory,” according to the suit filed Wednesday.
“I dreamed about being a teacher for a long time,” said Snyder, 27, of Strasburg, who has two young sons. She now works as a nanny.
The photo, taken at a 2005 Halloween party, shows Snyder wearing a pirate hat while drinking from a plastic “Mr. Goodbar” cup. It was posted on her own MySpace site.
“There were errors in judgment that relate to Pennsylvania’s Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators,” wrote professor J. Barry Girvin, who supervised Snyder’s work, according to the suit.
Jane S. Bray, dean of the School of Education, in a meeting that day accused Snyder of promoting underage drinking, the suit states.
That maybe the stupidest thing I ever heard or at least in the top ten. Even though the pic was labeled “Drunken Pirate” I fail to see how that promotes underage drinking. She does not look intoxicated in the picture and there’s no way to tell what she is drinking from the cup. Not to mention the fact that she was above the legal drinking age at the time the picture was taken.
Here’s the real culprit in this situation.
Snyder did her student-teaching at Conestoga Valley High School in 2006. Conestoga Valley officials told the college they would stop accepting student-teachers from Millersville if she went unpunished, the lawsuit said.
I think the officials at Conestoga Valley High School need to unwad their panties.
Snyder is seeking $75K in damages.

Since this is clearly a case of two-and-two-make-five on the administration’s end, what seriously needs to happen is to for Millersville University to shut the f*ck up and give this woman her degree. I can understand how a school that matters can afford to pull something like this, but c’mon, Millersville? The administration ought to be grateful for every last soul that walks through the door because that’s where the their stupid, overpaid asses get their paychecks from every week.

As a public school official, I google as well as check MySpace type sites for applicant information as part of a routine background check. Though I do not think this young lady should have been denied her teaching degree because of this picture. I will say that I would NOT consider hiring anyone who has no better judgment than to publish a picture on the Internet that, in my opinion, is questionable at best. Any way you slice it, the caption Drunken Pirate speaks volumes and it is NOT a good thing.

When first reading this post I agree’d that the school was overreacting. After reading The last comment, my opinion has changed a bit. I do see where the schools would have concerns. Especially with all of the recent teachers in the spotlight and their questionable relationships with students. Schools can not be too careful because the teachers they hire, have great influence over our children.

Jacki hits tha nail on the head. What the hell is she thinking directing KIDS to her MySpace web site? “Drunken Pirate” or not, she should not be directing STUDENTS to her web site for any reason whatsoever.

This dean woman is a total D U M B A S S. How do you equate having a little drink at a party, alcoholic or not, with encouraging children to become alcoholics. I find it REAL hard to believe that this dean never had a drink in her life.
What kind of idiots do we have issuing degrees? Even if her myspace was public, who’s business is it to be digging and delving into her photos and trying to come up with ways to destroy her career? Can a person be a human having a little fun at a party without having someone with a big mouth searching their life and thoughts? I hate people who won’t shut up about something that isn’t any of their D A M N business.
If I was her, I would hire a con-artist to get me a fraudulent certification, and just find a school desperate for employees.
I don’t comply with double-standards, I have pictures all over my myspace, people (my friends only, THEY’RE PRIVATE FOR A REASON) can interpret them any way they feel, AND as long as they keep their mouths shut for the rest of their life they’re in no grave danger.
In conclusion, a little wisdom for the so called educated dean woman:
NOT EVERYBODY THINKS OF IT THAT WAY!!!
