Jerry Falwell’s funeral bomber

by Trench Reynolds on May 23rd, 2007

Bomb Plot Thwarted at Falwell’s Funeral:
I’m sure by now you’ve all heard about the nut job that was going to use bombs at Jerry Falwell’s funeral to take care of some protesters. Well, that nutjob has a name and it’s 19-year-old Mark D. Uhl of Amissville, Va. Thanks to Capt. Fantastic we now know that Uhl has a MySpace as well.

The student, 19-year-old Mark D. Uhl of Amissville, Va., reportedly told authorities that he was making the bombs to stop protesters from disrupting the funeral service. The devices were made of a combination of gasoline and detergent, a law enforcement official told ABC News’ Pierre Thomas. They were “slow burn,” according to the official, and would not have been very destructive.

To me that sounds more like it was designed to cause noxious fumes but what do I know? I don’t make bombs.

Anyway before I get any deeper into this post I wanted to say this post was not designed to be a discussion about Jerry Falwell. It just so happens that a crime happened at his funeral. I’m not a fan of his but I don’t want this post to turn into a bash Falwell thread. What I will talk about is the hypocrisy of this criminal. This will not be a thread about generalizations.

In his blog Uhl wrote the following

When I choose not to show my religion it’s not because I have no faith or beleifs but because I have no religion. Religion is defined as “The rules, tradition, and structure used by men in order to withhold the wrath of or to please a god or gods.” My christianity is not a religion. It is the beleif, the trust, and the faith in the one true god. I need no rules, no traditions, nor any structure to worship the god who created me. I worship freely how I wish to worship. I pray how I wish to pray. My god, my father, would want me to be comfortable worshiping him. Which is why christianity to me is not a religion but a method of praise.

Which I agree with. That is basically the philosophy behind my own Christianity. However I don’t think Christ would want you hurling bombs at people with dissenting opinions. Just call it a hunch. What he probably would have wanted was for someone to discuss their differences peacefully.

To want to settle your differences with violence automatically disqualifies you from being called a Christian.
