Mom Myspaces while baby drowns

by Trench on May 23rd, 2007

Police: Mom on MySpace when toddler drowns:

A 22-year-old woman was arrested in the negligent bathtub death of her 19-month-old son while she was on the social network MySpace, according to police.

A criminal case has been building against Nickolas Doidge’s mother, Shawna Doidge, since his drowning death on April 19. Police believe Doidge was on MySpace when she heard the calls of Nickolas’ 2-year-old brother from the bathtub. She attempted CPR, called a neighbor, and then called 911, according to police reports.

“The mother had essentially left the 19-month-old victim, Nickolas, and his 2-year-old brother in the bath tub alone for several minutes while she sat at her computer at the other end of the house,” according to Mason County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Dean Byrd.

I was unable to find a MySpace for Doidge.

    Thanks for the links.

On her profiles she seems like such a loving mother.

How did she let this happen?

She does seem to be a loving mother, especially compared to the profiles of other mothers in similar situations. However, I notice that her account has been accessed a number of times since her son died. She could have updated her profile(s) to portray herself in a more favorable and unassuming way. Though, woman’s intuition tells me that she may not have.
While I hope to be one someday, I am not a mother. I can’t help but give her some benefit of the doubt, in this situation. The media certainly has a way of blowing things out of proportion, and has particularly latched on to MySpace as a hot topic worthy of exaggerated emphasis in most any newsworthy event. We don’t know how much water was in that bath tub, or exactly how much noise the boys made, or exactly what drew her away from the bathroom to the computer. The facts are sketchy, and make her seem worthy of criticism. But, the key word is “seem.” For her sake, and the sake of those around her, I hope this was just an unfortunate tragedy with lessons from which we can all benefit.

Yes, like the lesson that you DO NOT EVER LEAVE A 2 YEAR OLD AND A 19 MONTH OLD ALONE, EVER!!!!!

Obviously she wasn’t “myspacing” if her last login was in May.
