Write Up on the Punta Gorda PD
Where the city meets cyberspace:
I’ve posted about the Punta Gorda, Florida Police Department many times on this site. They’re famous for taking down local drug dealers who approach them on their decoy MySpaces. The article is just a recap of the stories that I’ve already posted here but I did want to mention a quote from a mother of a drug dealer.
The first MySpace-related arrest occurred on Dec. 12, 2006, when 17-year-old David M. Carroll went to a Punta Gorda gas station with two ounces of marijuana intended for sale to the woman he thought he met online, a PGPD report said. He was arrested on charges of possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Following the arrest, Carroll’s mother, Pam Carroll, said she was unhappy with how the operation was carried out.
“It’s like entrapment,” she said. “What my son did was wrong, but what the officers did undercover was, too. It’s like bribing these kids because it’s right there — it’s easy money.”
Entrapment, you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Entrapment:
Police Decoy: Will you sell me some marijuana?
Suspect: Sure.
Not Entrapment:
Police Decoy: I like marijuana.
Suspect: Wanna buy some?
See the difference?
