Net bully regrets her part in hate site:
The other day I posted about a New Zealand girl that was being cyberbullied on Bebo. It turns out that thanks to that story in the NZ media one of the bullies is getting a taste of her own medicine.
One of the girls who bullied Tauranga Intermediate head girl Johnelle Hosking on the internet says she now regrets what she did.
The bully was a victim of abuse herself over the weekend when visitors to her Bebo site started vilifying her for what she did.
“I felt really bad,” she said of being bullied herself.
The 13-year-old, who refused to be named, said she and another friend came up with the idea of the Johnelle Haters!!! website on Bebo.
The parents are stepping up even though it’s a little late…
Her parents and the parents of three other girls allegedly responsible for bullying Johnelle say their daughters will no longer be able to use Bebo at home.
The girl’s father told the Bay Times his daughter “may” be able to have supervised access but he would discourage her from using the site again.
“I read about it in the paper and spoke to her [my daughter] about it. Perhaps I should have paid more attention to what was going on. The whole thing’s just snowballed,” he said.
The Bay Times also contacted other parents whose children were reportedly involved and asked what knowledge they had of the site and to what degree their daughters were involved. All refused to be named.
The mother of the 13-year-old who is reported to have helped set up the site, said she became aware of the website the day it was launched.
The mother said her daughter’s previous “privileges’ on the internet, including access to Bebo, had since been stripped.
Some parents are still deniers…
The mothers of the two other 13-year-old girls reportedly involved, said their daughters had little, if anything, to do with bullying Johnelle online.
All girls had been friends at the start of the year, with one mother describing the saga between the girls’ as “incredibly ridiculous”.
Predators are not the only reason to check your kids’ online habits.
