Doing Business

Strangers A ‘Cost of Doing Business’ On MySpace:
A post by Jason Lee Miller at WebProNews contains a starling reality when it comes to kids and MySpace or any other social network…

The latest report from Pew Internet and American Life Project confirms what might be common sense about teens and social networking, but also has a couple of surprises. The not-a-shocker news: photos and social networking profiles increase the likelihood your son or daughter is approached by a creep.

What you may not want to hear: The kids are cool with this; they consider it a “cost of doing business.”

That gave me more than a shiver when I read it.

Please go and read the rest of Mr. Miller’s sobering post.

The kids aren’t phased by it. That’s definitely true…I definitely wouldn’t say that they’re “cool with it”. Most of them are smart enough to pretty much instantaneously block/ignore the creep who approaches them. The ones who don’t…well I think we always had to worry about those kids even before the Myspace revolution!

Yes, and now we need to watch over them. That’s part of being a parent.

As a younger reader that started actively using the internet on a daily basis around the time I was 10 years old, I feel the need to comment on this. Remember parents, teachers and PSA’s are constantly reminding kids how many “weirdos” are out there on the internet, potentially just waiting for them. Yet children still have computers to use (many times one of their own), are encouraged to develop skills with computers to use in their futures, and watch adults use them on a regular basis. Of course it’s a cost of doing business to them, as well it should be for anyone on the internet. What’s important is making sure your child realizes that those people are out there and they should be wary; NOT afraid.
