A cautionary tale from Tennessee

by Trench on February 22nd, 2008

Hawkins teen calls 33-year-old man she met on MySpace:
No actual crime has been proven committed yet but this should still serve as a cautionary tale.

A 13-year-old girl from Rogersville, Tennessee got in trouble with her dad when he found out that she was conversing over the phone with a 33-year-old trucker. Of course the girl met the man via MySpace.

“(The girl) stated that she had been speaking to a 33-year-old man on MySpace who said he was a truck driver,” Woods stated in his report. “The male gave his phone number to (the girl) via e-mail. I asked if she gave any personal information, which she said she hadn’t. She had met the male on MySpace chat for teens.”

The girl spoke to Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office Deputy James Woods and wondered what kind of trouble she was legally in.

As of right now no criminal act had taken place…

Sheriff Roger Christian said the incident is under investigation. But for the communications to be a criminal act, the man would have had to proposition the girl or send her illicit materials.

As expected the girl was grounded.

Unfortunate situation with a happy ending. I read the article. She is very lucky to have a proactive parent. A good example of a parent following up on what their kid is doing, and taking care of a situation before something happens. Prevention!!

The school’s contacting the police was also an excellent move. The police can investigate to see if this man is a predator, or just a stupid man.
