YouTube caused Welsh suicides

by Trench on March 20th, 2008

Bridgend coroner: YouTube clip ‘incited suicide’:
You’ve seen me post about the suicides in Bridgend, Wales before and how some people have blamed the suicides on the social networking site Bebo. Well, the coroner investigating the suicides will have no part of that Bebo nonsense. He’s blaming YouTube instead…

Philip Walters, who has been investigating a string of suspected suicides in the area since January 2007, singled out video-sharing websites such as YouTube for criticism.

In one YouTube clip, viewed by the Bridgend coroner, an American man explains how to tie a hangman’s noose and mentions his growing fanbase in the UK.

Mr Walters said the man’s diary was very disturbing and that there was no doubt it was encouraging people to take their own lives.

“If that was not the case, why bother to instruct people to commit suicide?” he said.

Talk about jumping to conclusions. So because of one YouTube video posted by some asshat that’s probably been pulled by now 17 Welsh youths from the same town have all killed themselves. I’m not buying it.

If you look at the picture of Mr. Walters he looks like the type that would have the internet burned as a witch.

Nobody wants to take responsibility for anything anymore. Parents, governments - nobody. Our entire society loves to pass the buck any time there’s a problem.

Let’s blkame YouTube, let’s blame TV, let’s blame music. How about better parenting? How about actually talking to and listening to your children? Maybe if they had some parental guidance and support they wouldn’t feel the need to kill themselves.

    This is ridiculous.

Now at least we won’t have any more people committing suicide. We’ve discovered the problem!

It would be interesting to attempt to raise a child in this culture with as little media exposure as possible and see if he or she is more or less screwed-up in the head than the average kid. Likely impossible, of course, so it’s more of a thought experiment than anything else.

May I refer you to Lizzie Borden and Jack the Ripper? heheheh.

I go on the internet all the time. I’ve even gone on that dangerous YouTube! I know how to tie a noose. I’ve watched violent movies. I listen to metal. I play violent video games.

Guess what? I haven’t killed myself nor have I killed (or even entertained the notion of killing) anyone else.

    There goes that theory, huh?

Blame everyone but those who did it and the parents who didn’t raise them right.

I agree with Rob. Theres plenty of stories blaming myspace, facebook, youtube, ect. But no parents or actual people. Go figure.
So because someone watches a clip on how to tie a noose, or whatever that was, everyone ran around hanging themselves? I don’t buy that bullshit =/.
Youd have to be pretty down low about yourself to take advise from a youtube video and go hang yourself cuz some random guy said so.
I listen to music with “dark themes”, I know how to tie a noose and i have been to the deep dark woods of youtube. Last I checked I’m still kickin’
