Baltimore Art Teacher Claims Student Recorded Classroom Beating Attack:
I’m beginning to detect a theme this week.
A Baltimore art teacher by the name of Jolita Berry was assaulted by one of her students. The beating was captured on a cell phone camera and posted on MySpace.
She says the attack began when she told a female student to sit down and behave. As the girl’s friends cheered her on, Berry says the girl hit her in the face.
Police are investigating but listen to what the principal told her…
Berry says her principal told her that telling the student she was going to defend herself triggered the attack.
This is why attacks like this keep happening because the school administration doesn’t want to do anything about it.

You know…not that I’m all that old, but when I was a kid NO ONE would hit a teacher. What’s with these kids these days and who the hell is teaching them how to cope with the real world? This age scares me. These kids are going to grow up and run the world one day. Just wow.

What I don’t understand is why students nowadays are so violent. Granted I graduated high school about 10 monthes ago but things like this make alot of us teens weither in high school or recently out look really bad. I was never the perfect student but I never would even think about doing most of the things that alot of teens seem to be doing lately. I hope those girls get what they diserve for what they did to that poor teacher. Hopefully parents are comming to their senses and try to notice any kind of behavior that may lead to this kind of thing. I can tell you that when I have kids of my own I will make it a point that that kind of behavior is not acceptable. I have a few lil questions tho, 1. did they think that they werent going to get into trouble for that? 2. i dont understand why the girl felt the need to beat the teacher just for asking her to take a seat. its just confusing to me.

Leslie, I’d bet that girl doesn’t have any parenting. She’s probably never seen her Dad and her mother is addicted to crack or alcohol. It’s unfortunate…

Yes, that is the crux of the matter. Show me a teen criminal and I’ll show you a dysfunctional teen mother. And I can’t show you the father cuz said mother has no clue as to where he is and who or what he or it is.

RootCause.. I think your analysis is partially correct, if no one is there to teach the kids how to act they are going to respond emotionally to every situation and constantly feel like they have a right to beat up anyone that makes them feel bad.
But saying the kids mom is on crack and dad is absent does NOT ever excuse their actions. That student should be expelled and put into a juvenile correction facility, all the kids standing around cheering the kid on need to be punished as well. The one kid who actually went and told an administrator should be commended.
Clearly since the school didn’t report this violent action they should be shut down as well. The administration has an obligation to provide a safe environment for a teacher to teach in. It seems like this school in Baltimore would rather keep their problems secret and let the place descend into some “Lord of the Flies” type of experiment.

I agree that the kid should be expelled and sent to a Juvenile Detention center, more than anything as an example to the other kids. Also, the principal should be fired immediately. Or better yet locked in a room with the student that attacked the teacher.

What an absolute tragedy! Then the comments that followed by the admin suggested that she brought it on herself? Are kidding me?! No teacher deserves to be beat up by a student and then abandoned by those who can help her.
The trend is that kids are engaging in beatings, video taping it, and posting it on my space and you tube. Videos like these are all over, and there are those who encourage other kids to engage in fighting just to tape them.
Start typing your letter of resignation, teach, as soon as you can see (!) and get the h out of that school! That student attacked because she sensed she could. The school is also dysfunctional in the worst way.
Admins like to sweep things under the rug…to avoid lawsuits. But this is beyond, way beyond, a potentially legal situation. Suggestion admin…contact the district’s attorney and stand behind this teacher regardless of your professional opinion of the teacher…she is YOUR teacher. Protect her!

I’m a substitute teacher for 2 years. I get all these threats all the time. I work in somewhat of a violent city.
Personally, what do you expect? You have too many single mothers out there who are probably inadequate as a parent.
Either way its a joke the way our kids are running wild. We need more incidents like this, hopefully the outrage will be loud enough so that schools actually change what they are doing.

Phanekim, Please tell me you’re not down on single mothers. A lot of them are doing their best after all. There are plenty of nuclear families that neglect their children, neglect to see what’s going on in their sons and daughters lives, or just plain make excuses for their sweet little snookums. So you can’t just single out the working moms who don’t -have- any help, and have to play bread winner, mother, and father to these kids.

They couldn’t pay me ENOUGH to be a teacher. Further more Where’s my shot gun!
And I agree the student, her parents, and the principal should be prosecuted.

This girl needs a good old fashioned ass whipping from her parents..
I think the problem here is that kids nowadays are ALLOWED to make excuses for everything.
ANd these kids will blame “their anger” on stupid shit that happened when they were young..who cares? bad shit happens to people all the time.
Get over it already..
my dad left me when I was a kid and I didn’t have a perfect life but I knew what was right and what was wrong and I would never attack an innocent person for no reason.
the girl that did this needs to be expelled and all the little shit heads that cheered her on need to be punished right along with her.

I to am a teacher in the baltimore city public school. On several occasions I visited this school to pick up my 2 neices. I myself have witness the rudeness of students. I also witness how the administrator and security staff interacted with them. The administrator and security staff acted as if they were their friends instead of an authority figure.
I find it appalling. The city officials and CEO aren’t concerned with what the teachers have to deal with all their concerned with are test scores. They don’t defend teachers. This is why the students don’t have respect for the teacher because they see that authority figures don’t respect teachers i.e. principals. Principals don’t have control of their school and need to attend a workshop on how to treat their teachers: with respect.
I proposed that parents volunteer on day a month at their childs school to get the real deal of what its like to be in these environment.
My sympathy goes out to these teachers. If we don’t teach these children then who will, not the authority figures. I’d like to see them come into these school and deal with what we have to.

I recently left the school system and agree with Ms Smith. The admin’s comment is not a surprise or unusual. Many teachers get pushed, shoved treatened and abused. The admins say what did you do to the students. I’m not just talking about high school. I hope the teacher recovers and finds another job!!!

I am a substitute teacher and I hear about teachers being hit. The schools in my area are allowed to create disciplinary procedures “per school” and stick to them. Unfortunately schools are too afraid. The teachers however , just sista round and bitch about how the kids feel they should be”rewarded”for coming to school. This is not about Myspace. There are A LOT WORSE things on the Internet than Myspace. I wish a place existed where we could send all the asses…oh there is already…it’s called PRISON!
