Arlington County PD on MySpace

by Trench on May 2nd, 2008

Police Try MySpace to Deter Sexual Predators:
The Arlington County police department have made their very own MySpace hoping that kids will add them as their friend to discourage predators.

“Think of it as a ‘Beware of the Dogs’ sign,” said Lt. Brett Butler, head of the department’s Special Victims Unit.

“If someone goes to the child’s page and sees that we’re a friend, that might make them think twice about contacting that child if they have illicit intentions. The grand hope is that it’ll scare them from doing it at all.”

If you represent a police department and have either a MySpace or a YouTube channel please contact me and I’ll be more than happy to feature it.

    That’s a great idea!

Not sure how effective it will be, but it shows forward thinking by the police department, which is great - and hopefully they can use this idea to spread awareness to local parents about supervising their children’s Myspaces.

I love the idea! My only concern is that they will get sued by parents whose kids still do stupid stuff online even though they had the kids add the police to their friends list. It’s kind of like the lawsuits over fake security cameras, do the parents have an expectation that by adding the police the police are now monitoring their kids myspace activity? A reasonable person would say “no”, but reasonable people aren’t normally the ones filing these kinds of lawsuits. I really do have to give them credit for an awesome idea though!
